Description
Attomica are one of the biggest names of the old Brazilian Thrash scene: like many others, they were obscured by the way more popular Sepultura, but they definitely emerged from the darkness and achieved remarkable success, along with other national acts like Holocausto, Mutilator, Vulcano and the like: all names heavily influenced by the rising Death and Black currents.
Attomica made no exception in their beginnings, before changing their recipe a couple of times. So, whereas their self-titled debut (1987) was put up with the clear intention of becoming “the fastest band in the world” (sic), bordering on Black Metal before Black Metal itself was born, “Limits of Insanity” (1989) was a half-misstep since it tilted towards a more Speed Metal style, and I can imagine why it’s rarely mentioned among cult old-school Brazilian Metal records.
But then “Disturbing the Noise” came, just in time for the final shots of our beloved genre, and Attomica suddenly returned to the brutality radar of metalheads, rejoining the club they had left two years earlier. And believe me, the artwork is just the tip of the iceberg of what we will find on here. Clearly, these guys don’t want you to waste your time, so they slam all their most violent songs at the beginning of the album. As a result, side A of the LP alone nearly reaches Thrash perfection, pure headbanging paradise.
With “Disturbing the Noise”, Attomica contributed to pushing the genre to its very limits like few others, and while the music is still clearly Thrash Metal, most of the time the overall pace of the drumming lies somewhere between a standard Thrash beat and a slightly slower Death blast beat. It’s no wonder that, by the time you reach the 4th song, ‘Violence and Terror’, which is also the first with a standard tempo, if your neck is still in place, it will seem pretty slow!
Yes, “Ways of Death”, “The Chainsaw”, “Deathraiser”, each one aims for 1st place in a death race for the fastest track on the album. They are virtually interchangeable, but each one is too good to be ignored.
