From their earliest recordings the band established an approach built around weight, repetition and confrontation, stripping heavy music down to its most physical components while retaining a distinct sense of brutal humour. Love Sex Machine continue to expand through sludge, post-metal, post-hardcore and blackened extremity as a band with zero interest in restraint or convention.

“We never start a record with a theme. This one was finished way before we had any idea what it was. Then one of us played the whole thing back and said it sounded unhinged and desperate, so we gave it the most wholesome title we could think of, Thriving. It’s the kind of word you might see on a corporate motivational poster. It didn’t feel right, which is on brand for a metal band called Love Sex Machine.“ (Yves)

Uncompromising, darkly humorous and physically overwhelming, Love Sex Machine‘s new album ‘Thriving’ is “…uglier, more direct and more violent than anything we’ve done.“ (Yves) Though routed in a violent approach to sludge, they constantly distort that foundation through the angular precision of modern metal, the tension of post-hardcore and the colder, more hostile colours of black metal. The songs arrive and sustain such density and repetition that their massive depth of sound is unapologetically abrasive; rattling listeners to the core and giving direct access to the human shadow in all its vile glory.

“Our approach has always been « I’ve got this sick stupid riff, let’s build a song around it. » What changed is that noise and layers were there from the start this time and part of the writing. On the previous records they were mostly an afterthought. Some songs were also structured around the vocal parts which has never been the case in any of our songs before as far as I remember.“ (Yves)

The band's greatest weapon is economy. Riffs and melodies can be brutally simple, but the way they are weighted, repeated and locked into the drums gives it an architectural force. Guitars grind in low registers while the rhythm section creates a sensation of enormous forward pressure. Camille's drumming is central to that effect, favouring physical impact and tightly controlled rhythmic detail over ornamental excess. Jb and Yves build guitar parts that feel simultaneously primitive and highly engineered, with syncopation and repetition turning individual figures into prolonged states of tension.

“The record was made almost entirely by us, so it is probably the most honest reflection of where we are.“ (Yves)

Yves' distinctive voice is a harsh, ragged presence full of eruption and scorn. Within the sharp lyrics and ferocious expression is a human volatility, complemented and framed by the hypnotic precision of the instrumentation.

“Drums were recorded with Frédéric Pecqueur at Studio C&P, same as the previous record. Everything else we did ourselves, and I mixed it this time. Brad Boatright at Audiosiege handled the mastering. The last record was mixed by Sanford Parker, mixing only. He’s my favourite producer and made some of my favourite records ever, but sending him the tracks after the fact and asking him to mix them felt like shooting in the dark. So this time I did it myself.“ (Yves)

Short and brutally immediate compositions give ‘Thriving’ a particularly urgent character, whilst each song stands unique in the onslaught of ear-drums and curdling flesh. The result is music that is filthy yet precise, punishing yet strangely catchy, ugly yet meticulously constructed. Love Sex Machine make heaviness itself the organising principle, and then find increasingly inventive ways to make it stampede over all expectations and sensibilities.

“The first song is based on a true story. We pass lyric ideas around while the record is being written, and I read through them to see where something might fit. One set was about a cat that was found dead in the neighborhood, and how devastated the owner was. They were sappy af and had no business being on a violently apocalyptic sludge record. We twisted them until they were deranged enough to work. It’s still a song about a dead cat in the neighborhood.“ (Yves)

FOR FANS OF

Admiral Angry * Lord Mantis * Indian * LLNN * Amenra * Limp Bizkit
