Bascule Lift Bridge - Located in Ashtabula Harbor. This lift bridge was created in the early to mid 1900s to accommodate marina traffic and Conrails iron ore freighters. It is still in use as the main gateway to Lake Erie from the Ashtabula River. There are only a few lift bridges left in functioning condition throughout the USA and Ashtabula has one of only a couple Bascule type. The bridge goes up on the hour and half hour and is manned 24/7 from the time the river thaws in the spring to the time it freezes completely over in either November or December. It can open up to literally 90 degrees perpendicular to the road surface on shore.
